Every year, as we approach the end of July and the beginning of August, conversations about the Lion’s Gate Portal begin to fill our social media feeds. You’ll often hear that July 28 marks the opening of the portal, August 8 (8/8) is its peak, and August 12 is when it closes.
But where did these dates come from, and how do they relate to the ancient traditions that inspired them?
I believe it’s important to approach this season with both curiosity and respect. We can honor history while also respecting the personal meaning people find in modern spiritual practices.
Honoring an Ancient Tradition
Long before the term Lion’s Gate Portal became popular, the ancient Kemetic tradition observed Wep Ronpet, meaning the “Opening of the Year.” This sacred season typically occurred between the last weeks of July and the first weeks of August and was connected to the heliacal rising of Sirius, the annual flooding of the Nile, and themes of renewal, fertility, abundance, and new beginnings.
Because this period often falls during Leo season, many people naturally draw symbolic connections between the Sun, Sirius, Ra, and Horus. These associations remind us of life, light, and the continual cycle of renewal.
The Modern Lion’s Gate Portal
The Lion’s Gate Portal, as it is widely discussed today, is a much more recent spiritual concept.
The earliest references to the annual 8/8 Lion’s Gate Portal appear around 1998, following the August 8, 1998 eclipse. Since then, it has grown into a meaningful practice for many people within modern spiritual communities. However, there is no historical evidence that an annual event called the “Lion’s Gate Portal” was observed under that name in ancient Egypt or other ancient civilizations.
You’ll also hear that August 8 represents a special alignment between Sirius and our Sun. From an astronomical perspective, that isn’t the case. Sirius is not aligned with the Sun on August 8. This year, Sirius is near 14° Cancer, and its conjunction with the Sun occurred around July 6, rather than during the commonly celebrated Lion’s Gate dates.
You’ll also hear claims that the Giza pyramids or Orion’s Belt align with Sirius specifically during Lion’s Gate. While these ideas are meaningful to many people spiritually, there is no historical or astronomical evidence confirming those specific claims as the basis for an ancient annual Lion’s Gate celebration.
Regardless of where the modern concept originated, I believe the heart of it is what matters. If people choose to use this season to meditate, reflect, set intentions, or reconnect with themselves, who are we to judge? They aren’t harming anyone. More power to them if this time helps them feel inspired, hopeful, or connected to something greater.
For me, honoring both the ancient Kemetic roots of this season and the sincere intentions of those participating today can exist side by side. We can appreciate the history while also respecting the personal meaning others find in modern spiritual practices.
