The Roots of Ayurveda
Ayurveda origins goes back to a period in India called the Samhita period. “Samhita” is a collection of historical texts or scriptures, that discusses ancient healing systems. The most well known Ayurveda text during the Samhita period was the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya. In the Charaka Samhita texts, India God Brahma created Ayurveda before he created the Universe.
Brahma created different life forms. He wanted his creations to understand how to apply Ayurveda practices to their everyday life. It is said that Brahma first taught Ayurveda to a leader called Daksha Prajapati, who taught the Ashwin Kumaras who taught Indra. You can learn more about the Ashwins on my post called, “Ashwin Nakshatra Vedic Star: 5 Essential Tips to Understand the Kumaras.”
After many centuries of good health and prosperity, the Dwapara Yuga (Bronze Age) began. This period kicked off the beginning of disease and ill health. Scared of all the illnesses that spread throughout many communities, Sage Bharadwaj was chosen to approach Indra,(King of Gods) and ask if Indra could teach him Ayurveda. Indra said yes and for many years, Sage Bharadwaj was Indra student. Eventually Sage Bharadwaj began to teach Ayurveda to several sages.
Out of the several sages who was given this sacred knowledge, Sage Agnivesh became one of the star pupils. Sage Agnivesh created manuscripts that compiled all that he learned. Ayurveda’s teachings was passed down through generations by revered sages and scholars. This information was taught in a series of different holistic practices and subcategories.
